After losing the Mexican American War, Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, ceding 55% of its territory, including the present-day states California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, most of Arizona and Colorado, and parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Wyoming.
